Abstract

With an eye toward finding creative and successful assessment approaches that advance student learning and achievement, this study set out to investigate the opportunities and difficulties of evaluating student learning in arts and social sciences at Nigerian universities. To gain insights from instructors and pupils in arts and social sciences departments in Nigerian institutions, the research used a mixed-methods methodology that incorporated both qualitative and quantitative data gathering and analysis techniques. Though conventional assessment techniques like written examinations and essays are still prevalent in Nigerian universities, the results of the study showed that both students and teachers see the need for more creative strategies including project-based assignments, peer reviews, and self-assessments to foster critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving ability. Additionally, discovered was restricted resources, poor infrastructure, and big class sizes limit assessment methods in arts and social sciences often. The study finds that incorporating conventional approaches with new ones a blended assessment strategy can help Nigerian universities foster arts and social sciences student learning and success. The study suggests that Nigerian institutions should embrace more creative assessment techniques, a student-centered approach to evaluation, regular feedback and opportunities for introspection, and that professors should be helped to develop their assessment abilities and keep current with best assessment practices. By using creative assessment methods, Nigerian universities can support student learning and success, therefore equipping graduates for the challenges of the 21st century.
