Abstract

This research seeks to understand the situation in urban Nigeria in terms of the awareness, adoption, and perceptions of green energy solutions, as well as reveals the challenges and opportunities available for sustainable development. Using a mixed-methods approach allowed for the integration of various frameworks for the collection and the analysis of data. The evidence indicates that despite the increasing recognition of green energy alternatives, the adoption of such technologies is still lacking primarily due to the high initial cost (mean = 3.49, SD = 3.20), unaffordable financing (mean = 3.64, SD = 3.38), and insufficient technical capacity (mean = 3.51, SD = 3.22). The study points toward the importance of economically feasible and legally stipulated frameworks, and also coordinated public informational outreach efforts related to green energy, focused on advocacy adoption of green energy alternatives, suggesting also public-private-community collaboration. The findings of this study contributes to the efforts of encouraging the adoption of sustainable alternatives and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in Nigeria directed at policymakers, industrialists, and social organizations aimed at sustainable development in Nigeria. The proposed actions of this study will enable Nigeria to endorse green energy technologies, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and progress toward sustainable development. This study also promotes the need for comprehensive approaches to sustainable development through additional research on green energy technologies in Nigeria.
